This page explains what happens to your information when you use SmartBuild (smartbuilduk.co.uk and the SmartBuild web app). In short: DIY users don't need to sign up, and we don't run analytics. Only tradespeople who choose a trade account sign in, with their email address. Your lists, quotes and customer details stay on your device. When you click a link to a supplier, affiliate tracking may apply. Details are below.

Affiliate links and tracking cookies
Disclosure: Some links are affiliate links. If you buy, SmartBuild may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This never changes the price you pay, and it never affects how suppliers are ranked: results are always ordered by price, and suppliers cannot pay for placement. How SmartBuild makes money.
Some supplier links in SmartBuild (for example Travis Perkins buy links) go through the Awin affiliate network. If we start working with another affiliate network, we'll name it here before its links appear on SmartBuild. Links to suppliers without an affiliate arrangement are plain links and earn us nothing. When you click an affiliate link:
- you pass through the network's tracking address (for example
awin1.com) on your way to the supplier's website; - the network and/or the supplier may set a cookie or similar identifier in your browser, so that a purchase you make can be credited to SmartBuild. These cookies are set on their websites, not on smartbuilduk.co.uk, and last for a limited period set by the network or supplier;
- the network and supplier process this information under their own privacy policies. For Awin, see awin.com/gb/privacy.
We receive reports of commission earned (for example the order value and date). They don't tell us who you are. You can block or delete these cookies in your browser settings, or use a supplier's site directly instead of our links.
Cookies on smartbuilduk.co.uk
SmartBuild does not set any cookies of its own, and it doesn't run analytics, advertising or tracking scripts. That's why there is no cookie banner: there is nothing optional to accept or refuse. The only things stored on your device are the items listed in the next section, which the app needs to work (your list, settings and, if you have a trade account, your sign-in). Affiliate cookies are only ever set by the network or supplier on their own website, after you choose to click a supplier link, as described above.
Counting supplier link clicks
When you click a buy link or a "find a tradesperson" link, the app sends one small message to our own server saying which supplier, which product or project, the type of link and which SmartBuild page it was on. It contains nothing about you: no cookie, no identifier, and we don't store your IP address or browser details with it. We only use the daily totals to see which links people find useful. Nothing is sent to any third party.
Counting use of the room by room planner
To see whether the room by room planner is useful, the app also sends our own server an anonymous count when someone opens the planner, adds a room, reaches the project summary, starts a quote, or prints or downloads a quote, and when the "add to home screen" suggestion is shown, accepted or dismissed. Each message is only the name of that action, for example "room_added". It never includes anything you type (room names, notes, measurements, business or client names, addresses or prices), and there is no cookie, no identifier, and no IP address or browser details stored with it. We only keep daily totals. Nothing is sent to any third party.
What the app stores on your device
The SmartBuild app saves your work in your browser's local storage on your own device. It is not sent to us.

If you enter customer details in SmartBuild Trade, you are responsible for that information. It stays on your device unless you choose to email a quote. You can delete everything at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser settings.
The app also uses a service worker that keeps a copy of the app's own files (pages, scripts, price data) on your device, so it loads quickly and works offline. It doesn't store personal information and doesn't cache other websites.
Trade accounts
Trade features (quotes, labour, customers) need a free trade account. To sign in you give us your email address, and we email you a one-time sign-in code and link. There is no password. We use your email only to sign you in, to manage your trade account (for example approving access) and to contact you about it. We don't use it for marketing unless you ask us to.
Sign-in is provided by Supabase, which stores your email address, an account ID and sign-in times on servers in the EU/UK region we choose for the project, under its privacy policy and data processing agreement. Sign-in emails are sent through our email provider. Your quotes and customer details are not sent to Supabase: they stay on your device. To close your trade account and delete your email address, contact hello@smartbuilduk.co.uk.
Sharing a list
"Share list" creates a link that contains your materials and quantities, after the # in the web address. Browsers don't send that part of a link to a website, so the list isn't stored on or sent to our servers. It goes only where you choose to send it: your phone's share sheet, WhatsApp, email, or wherever you paste the link. Anyone who opens the link sees the list priced with that day's prices. "Print or save PDF" uses your browser's own print feature.
Emails
"Email this list" and "Email quote" open your own email app with the text filled in. Nothing is sent through SmartBuild. If you email us at hello@smartbuilduk.co.uk, we use your message only to reply, and keep it only as long as needed.
Hosting, fonts and images
- If you send feedback with the form under a project calculator, we receive your message, the project name and, only if you give it, your email address. Netlify stores it for us and filters spam. It is never published, and we use your email only to reply. Ask us to delete it at any time.
- If you use the Send feedback or report a problem form, we receive the type you choose, your message, the page you came from (for example the room planner or the quote form, never your project details) and, only if you give it, your email address. It is stored by Netlify Forms for us, never published, and used only to reply to you and improve SmartBuild. Ask us to delete it at any time.
- The site is hosted by Netlify, which keeps standard server logs (such as IP address and pages requested) for security and reliability.
- Fonts are hosted on smartbuilduk.co.uk itself, so no font service sees your visit.
- Product images load directly from the supplier's image server (for Travis Perkins,
dam-assets.apps.travisperkins.group), which receives your IP address when your browser fetches an image.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law (UK GDPR) you have rights to access, correct and delete personal data we hold about you, and to object to its use. We hold very little: usually only emails you send us, and the email address of a trade account if you have one. Contact hello@smartbuilduk.co.uk. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes
If this policy changes (for example when new suppliers or affiliate networks join), we'll update this page and the date at the top.
